What Should Students Still Learn?
For centuries, universities were built around a simple assumption: knowledge was scarce. Books were expensive, experts were difficult to reach and access to reliable information was limited. Universities therefore became institutions that collected, preserved and transmitted knowledge from one generation to the next.
Artificial intelligence challenges that historical foundation. Information is no longer difficult to obtain and increasingly AI can explain, summarise and synthesise knowledge within seconds. The central question for higher education is therefore no longer how students gain access to information, but what universities should teach when access is no longer the scarce resource.
The future of higher education may ultimately depend on answering that question.
The End of Knowledge Scarcity
Every major technological revolution has transformed education. The printing press reduced dependence on handwritten manuscripts. The internet democratised access to information. Artificial intelligence represents another step in that evolution, but with a fundamental difference: it no longer merely retrieves knowledge, it increasingly organises, explains and generates it. That does not make universities obsolete. It changes the source of their value.
If information becomes abundant, universities can no longer define themselves primarily by providing access to it. Their role shifts from transmitting knowledge to helping students understand how knowledge is created, challenged and responsibly applied.
Information Is Not Judgement
Artificial intelligence can produce convincing explanations, compare competing theories and generate sophisticated analyses within seconds. What it cannot do is assume responsibility for the consequences of those analyses. Information is not the same as knowledge, and knowledge is not the same as judgement.
Judgement requires context. It requires ethical reflection, institutional responsibility and the ability to recognise uncertainty rather than conceal it. Above all, it requires knowing not only what appears plausible, but also what remains unknown. Perhaps that is becoming the defining competence of higher education.
Universities Were Never Just About Knowledge
Universities have always been more than repositories of information. They educate physicians entrusted with human lives, judges responsible for the rule of law, engineers designing critical infrastructure and public servants shaping democratic institutions. Alongside technical expertise, universities cultivate professional standards, intellectual discipline and the capacity to reason under conditions where certainty is impossible.
Knowledge has always mattered. But judgement may prove to be the institution’s most enduring contribution.
Learning to Think in an Age of AI
The purpose of higher education is therefore unlikely to disappear. It is likely to evolve.
Students will continue to study engineering, medicine, economics, law and history. Yet the emphasis may gradually shift from remembering information towards evaluating evidence, recognising assumptions and making well-reasoned decisions in complex environments.
Artificial intelligence changes the tools available to students. It does not reduce the need for wisdom. If anything, it makes wisdom more valuable.
Universities as Democratic Infrastructure
This transformation extends far beyond the labour market. Modern democracies depend upon citizens and professionals who can distinguish evidence from opinion, probability from certainty and analysis from persuasion.
Artificial intelligence dramatically lowers the cost of producing persuasive, polished and sometimes misleading information. As a result, the ability to separate signal from noise becomes a democratic capability rather than merely an academic skill.
Universities therefore perform a function that reaches beyond education alone. They strengthen the resilience of the public sphere by preparing graduates capable of exercising independent judgement in increasingly complex information environments.
In an age of artificial intelligence, that may become one of their most important public responsibilities.
Beyond Employability
Much of today’s discussion about AI focuses on employment. Which professions will disappear?Which skills remain valuable? These are important questions, but they are not the most fundamental ones.
Universities have never existed simply to maximise employability. They educate researchers, professionals and citizens whose decisions shape healthcare, justice, technology, public administration and democratic governance.
The quality of those decisions will matter even more when information itself is no longer the scarce resource.
Conclusion
Artificial intelligence does not diminish the importance of universities. It clarifies it. As information becomes increasingly accessible, the distinctive value of higher education shifts towards cultivating judgement, responsibility and intellectual integrity.
If artificial intelligence changes access to knowledge, universities may need to rediscover what they were always meant to teach: Not information, but judgement.
