Europe’s AI Gigafactories

Exploring the infrastructure behind Europe’s artificial intelligence ambitions

Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming one of Europe’s most strategic technologies. But while public debate often focuses on AI models and applications, far less attention is paid to the physical infrastructure that makes artificial intelligence possible. The European Commission’s initiative to support up to seven AI Gigafactories marks an important shift in that discussion.

About this series

Europe’s AI Gigafactories examines the technological, industrial and institutional foundations behind Europe’s AI ambitions. Rather than following daily announcements, the series explores the broader questions they raise. What exactly is an AI Gigafactory? How do semiconductors, photonics, telecommunications, cloud infrastructure and energy systems come together? Where should these facilities be located, who will finance them, and how will they be governed? As Europe’s AI strategy continues to evolve, this series follows not only the Gigafactories themselves, but the wider ecosystem that will determine whether Europe can build a competitive and resilient AI infrastructure.

Europe’s AI Gigafactories are about far more than computing power. They represent a new generation of strategic infrastructure where energy, semiconductors, photonics, connectivity and industrial ecosystems determine whether Europe’s AI ambitions can become reality.

Europe’s AI ambitions will not be realised by policy announcements alone. Behind every proposed AI Gigafactory lies a vast industrial ecosystem in which energy, semiconductors, connectivity, capital and talent must be coordinated into a single infrastructure.
