Media Literacy Lab

The Media Literacy Lab is an initiative of the European Media Society programme dedicated to exploring new approaches to media literacy in contemporary digital environments.

As information ecosystems evolve through digital platforms, algorithmic systems and artificial intelligence, traditional forms of media education are no longer sufficient. Citizens increasingly need to understand not only media content itself, but also the technological and structural forces shaping how information becomes visible and circulates online.

The Media Literacy Lab serves as a space for experimentation, collaboration and the development of new educational approaches to media literacy.

Rethinking media literacy

Media literacy has traditionally focused on helping citizens evaluate information sources and recognise misinformation. While these skills remain essential, the Media Literacy Lab explores how media literacy can evolve to address the complexities of modern digital information environments.

This includes understanding:

  • how algorithms influence the visibility of information
  • how digital platforms shape attention and public discourse
  • how artificial intelligence affects media production and communication
  • how citizens navigate increasingly complex information ecosystems

By exploring these questions, the Media Literacy Lab contributes to the development of more comprehensive approaches to media literacy and digital citizenship.

Experimentation and collaboration

The Media Literacy Lab functions as a collaborative environment where educators, researchers, journalists and cultural organisations can explore new methods and initiatives in media literacy.

Activities may include:

  • developing new educational frameworks and training materials
  • experimenting with innovative teaching approaches
  • organising workshops and collaborative initiatives
  • supporting pilot projects and European partnerships

The lab aims to connect practical experimentation with broader discussions about the future of media literacy in Europe.

Connecting practice and research

The Media Literacy Lab acts as a bridge between conceptual research and real-world initiatives. It provides a space where ideas related to media literacy, digital infrastructures and public communication can be tested and refined through practical collaboration.

Initiatives such as MediaAwareEU explore how these concepts can be translated into concrete training programmes and educational frameworks across different European contexts.

European Media Society

The Media Literacy Lab forms part of the European Media Society programme developed by Altair Media Europe. Within this framework, the lab contributes to a broader exploration of media literacy, digital culture and the technological infrastructures shaping contemporary communication.
